Hurray! Publishes "Outside the Fortress"

China's First Handset Novel

Beijing, September 1st,2004 - Hurray! purchased the rights to Outside the Fortress, China's first handset novel, on August 2, 2004 for RMB180,000.

Fuchang Qian, a renowned writer at the Chinese Academy of Guangdong, completed Outside the Fortress at the beginning of 2004. Since its release, the novel has been embraced by the media, the literary community and the telecom industry. The suspenseful, incremental launch of the novel set the stage for handset literature.

In January 2000 the novel Dear Friends, authored by a Japanese writer, was published in installments on handsets. According to a Japanese critic, the novel was "the most disputed work of this century." Two million users subscribed to the SMS novel in only one year. Today, over 10,000 online operators run SMS novel services in Japan.

Xiaoping Wang, vice president of marketing at Hurray!, said the company will publish Outside the Fortress in its various versions across China starting September 10, 2004. Any handset user can send a SMS "FMY" to 9100 (China Unicom) or 1000 (China Mobile) to subscribe to the novel in advance.

"When we purchased the 4,200 word, Outside the Fortress for RMB180,000, we were not that concerned about revenues. We just wanted to be the first VAS operator to introduce a new style of literature. So, we combined popular literature with networks and handsets, and thus handset literature was born," Wang Xiaoping said, commenting on the market prospects of Outside the Fortress. "China has a large user base of 87 million netizens and 300 million subscribers. Hurray! wants to be at the forefront of this new style of reading that will have both social and economic value."
